INTRODUCTION By Kristin Mackey I am so glad you’re interested in “doing your own thing”. After all, if not now, when? Whether or not you buy this book, I am excited to see that you have passion for designing a fulfilling life and doing creative things! Now of course I would be thrilled if you picked up the whole book. However, if you only need one or two chapter/articles, you will find what you need wherever you are on your journey. Providing results for hundreds of organizations and leading a team myself, I know what works. Contained in these pages are the morsels not readily found in cookie-cutter books on corporate and team development. Why? - because I like to get to the point. The chapter/articles are short, direct and packed with resources. They contain the same advice I give large organizations that pay high consulting fees to fix issues with their people. Now you have the same insight for your own gig. The easy part of our working world is the tangible. What boggles most is the emotional terrain that impacts everything from the quality of work produced to the bottom line. For these things I am hired. Whether coaching a lawyer to trump anxiety in public speaking, getting a person on the right career track or targeting a team’s real issue for low productivity, getting to the root saves time and money. The most underrated success driver is human emotion. Emotions drive leaders, staff and business. They make or break teams and keep or chase customers. They demoralize to depression or inspire to greatness. Regardless of the arena, emotions have BIG POWER. This book is not about making fast money (but great if you do!), generating sales or balancing your budget. Community schools offer excellent local programs with great instructors on business plans and the profit/loss world. I wrote this book because of the countless people that shared with me (nestled in their back-pocket) dreams of having a small bed and breakfast, a flower shop, a way to sell their art or jewelry, a day care, a healing center or some unique idea… “someday”. They were unclear on how to begin and had no idea what to expect. This kind of uncertainty became the fastest hand in pushing these dreams back into their pocket. And it does not have to be so with a little information. “Someday” is NOW. This is the information. To demonstrate my passion for your launching your own thing, I packed this book with everything from the necessary psychological digging you need to create a powerful vision to clean-cut “how to” lists that save you time (like holding short powerful meetings, a handy HR law list and my own public speaking secrets). I start at the very beginning with your vision and end with its evolution. I even included my TOP THREE TEAM BUILDING EXERCISES as a BONUS in the Get Teams to Play Nice!...and Succeed chapter. And finally, I included a FREE Get Started Tip Sheet following this introduction. Starting your own small gig is not for everyone, so getting clear about a few things before any dollars are invested is smart. Taking the time to do the inner work to ensure “your own thing” is not just a reaction to a lifeless job (which can be changed to a great one), but a true calling worth the amount a work it may ask of you. My greatest desire with this work is that as a result of reading and working with the ideas, you take out that “back pocket” dream and make it happen. I believe that if each one of us followed our bliss, the byproduct would be a more beautiful world. GET STARTED TIP SHEET This worksheet should get you started. The five tips below are designed to get you thinking about the process of your “Doing Your Own Thing”. Theory and execution are quite different. I find that if I am passionate enough about the theory of something, I will practice my way to its flawless execution. If not, I need to change direction or reinvent. Have fun… TIP #1 Take a sheet of paper and divide it into three columns. Name each column the following categories and go forth and make a list: a. HABITS b. HOBBIES c. PASSIONS (this is your Do Your Own Thing indicator) TIP #2 Ask friends and family for feedback on what they see as your greatest gifts and talents. It will give you a well rounded perspective. It is important to know the root of your passions. The root of my passion is all things related to transformation. Whether that manifests itself in work, style choices or simply a fresh perspective, I am most jazzed about helping people become more then they were before. TIP #3 Answer these questions for insight on your ultimate vision: 1. Where do you see your business going in 3/5/10 years? 2. What is the perfect schedule for you? 3. What activities are likely to fill your days now, in 2/5/10 years? Do you still like your business idea if it expanded? The answers will give you insight on the actual experience over just the idea of something. TIP #4 The most important overall question to ask when indecisive is: WHAT IS MY HIGHEST VALUE IN THIS SITUATION? TIP #5 The most important overall question to ask regarding any process is: HOW CAN THIS BE SIMPLIFIED?

In my work, it was my job to help heal those experiences, inspire empowerment, restore dignity and remind them of their basic humanity. Through conversations, instruction and true partnership - I heard their voice. Behind the struggles were great spirits eager to transcend the very landscape that challenged them. We continuously affirmed that we each have the power to create our futures. You no longer have to choose to be a victim.
